How to Make Health a Habit (When You’d Rather Not Run a Marathon)

One of the most powerful concepts that have shaped my life is “Beginning where you are.”

We have to look realistically at where we are and where we want to go in our life. The fact is, where we are right now was built with the skills and action steps we have acted on in our past – at least up to this point.
Where we go from here has to start by building on where we are now.

If there’s an area in your life that you want to grow in, it starts with an honest look and a step by step plan to advance it.
It’s important to have a direction and the end or final goal in mind. In fact it’s key, but we also need to look for the next step to move us closer to our goal.

Here’s an example from my own life. In the last few years I’ve noticed that my weight has been progressively increasing. My activity level was low and my eating habits were not good. If I had stayed on that path, my weight would progressively be growing (not an area I want to grow in).
I needed to make changes.

Now I could sign up for the Marathon Club (some people do), or go and buy a Bow Flex or some other fancy piece of exercise equipment, with fully intentions of getting back in shape. And for some people this would work, but I knew it wouldn’t for me. I’d be setting myself up for failure and depression, but I had to do something.

I started with the simple knowledge that I was not active enough.

My wife and I signed up for a Yoga class once a week and we started to walk daily.
It was only a small shift, but a shift in the right direction that I could easily make a habit and one that had a positive influence on building activity into my life.

We also looked at our eating habits; when and what we eat, how much and the quality of nutrition. We had some adjustments to make.

Now I’m no dietician, but the simple shifts were; more fresh fruit & vegetables, better protein sources, complex carbohydrates, less sugar and reduce how much processed and fast food we ate. These changes took some effort, but were not difficult shifts to make. Now that we’ve made the shift they have become a positive habit that has influenced our health. Even our children noticed the difference in us and we certainly noticed it in them.

The key is finding the shifts you can make right now, that are easy to do and build from there.

It doesn’t mean that you have to work out two hours a day (even though you could), or that you can never have a cinnamon bun and milkshake again. By building healthy habits into your life you can know your health is in good hands and you can advance those healthy habits to whatever level you’d like.

Today, we still attend Yoga class and exercise about 4 times a week using very simple programs that we can maintain for our health. We eat healthy and are setting a good example for those around us. Start where you are, get to the next step and build from there. The sky’s the limit.

Fitness has been one of my passions and one of the greatest programs I’ve found is here: Click Here!

Check it out and see what you think. I found the program easy to implement and filled with valuable fitness, exercise and nutrition information that you really don’t get anywhere else. They break it down to the basics that you can realistically apply to your life and busy schedule. I hope you enjoy it.
